Magazine Book Report

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I taught and assessed this project in a grade 6 classroom made up of a wide range of student achievement levels. This unit both teaches and assesses multiple strands of the Language Arts curriculum with an emphasis on Media Studies. Students each pick a novel of their desire and conference with the teacher to ensure it's suitability for this task, allowing differentiation. Students engage in a variety of activities including: examining the components and structures of a magazine; writing a feature persuasive article regarding their novel; practising research and writing a biography; creating engaging advertising; characterization and interview skills; writing a letter; and developing a comic strip. Students also create a cover for their magazine in the form of a collage using existing magazines. Although this unit has multiple components that may take a while to complete, students are given the opportunity to work at their own pace and remain engaged with the various activities that come with each component.
