MY PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

  • I will be a positive role model for my students by demonstrating what it means to be a contributing participant within our society.

  • I will guide my students through opportunities of authentic discovery that cater to their interests.

  • I will faster a safe classroom community that is supportive of student learning and development

  • I will ensure that the whole child is being considered in my daily teaching practice.

  • I will never stop seeking knowledge or developing professionally

I strongly believe in the importance of developing critical thinking skills; I want to teach students how to discover and evaluate information so that they can be active, contributing, members of society. I believe that teachers are able to do this by being facilitators for learning in the classroom and modelling expectations. Teachers should make connections from the curriculum to everyday life in order to engage students in learning that is relevant and authentic, but also catered to student interest and past experiences. Teachers should provide ample opportunities for discovery and inquiry, allowing for differentiation among students of various needs. In order to create meaningful learning opportunities in the classroom I strongly believe in offering choice in when it comes to assessment and evaluation.

The environment in which students learn plays a crucial role in their success. By creating a safe and welcoming classroom, where students from all backgrounds and cultures feel free to express ideas and ask questions and where each and every students is both supported and encouraged, students can best develop. In this environment I want to teach the whole child since I believe that I am not only responsible for students' academic development, but also in part their physical, social and emotional well being. This is best facilitated when fostering a safe and comfortable learning space.

The final pillar to my philosophy lies in professional development. As a professional I understand that it is my responsibility to remain informed. I believe in learning from a variety of sources in order to remain current and engaged with my teaching practice; such as from co-workers, administrators, online forums/blogs and workshops/seminars. In order for individual success I strongly believe that open communication between students, parents and administration is a key component. Through collaboration and open dialogue, students will be best supported.

“Our task is to educate their (our students) whole being so they can face the future. We may not see the future, but they will and our job is to help them make something of it.”
