Thumprint Self-Portrait

This project would be a fantastic project to do at the begining of the year for both Language Arts and Visual Arts. Not only does it ease students into writing by giving them an easy topic (themselves) but it also allows you as the teacher to really get to know your students as you read each work of art. The thumbprint aspect of the assignment is a fun alternative to the traditional self-portraits of students faces and is easy to personalize while allowing even students who don't normally excel at art to succeed.

Examples from a grade 6 class at John Young Elementary, Kanata, ON.

Each thumbprint is blown up with the photo copy machine until it is the size of about a students face. Next it is traced with a dark marker so that it is easier to follow with their writing when a blank sheet is placed over top and carefully taped in place.
